Dodgers News: Tommy Edman Hoping To Steal Bases & Fill Versatile Role With Ankle Surgery

This offseason provides the Los Angeles Dodgers a small chance to retool and fill in some of their roster needs, but it’s also an opportunity for injured players like Tommy Edman to get healthy after a long and grueling year.

Edman dealt with right ankle trouble for most of the 2025 season, which impacted his ability on the field in a variety of ways. The sprained ankle required two separate stints on the injured list, and even then, Edman was playing at less than 100% when he was on the field.

During an appearance on “The Sedano and Kap Morning Show” on ESPN LA sports radio, Edman discussed his goals for the 2026 season after undergoing a procedure on his right ankle:

“Hopefully I’ll be in a spot where I can play both. That’s kind of the goal, just to get back to a spot where I’m fully 100% and can do everything. Even stealing bases. I haven’t stolen any bases the last two years because my ankle would flare up any time I tried to do that. So that’s the goal, to get back to 100% of what I typically am as a baseball player, and that would mean playing center field, second base and wherever else I’m needed.”

Edman was limited to 97 games this past season and batted a career-worst .225/.274/.382 with 13 doubles and 13 home runs.

The Dodgers signed him to a five-year, $75 million contract extension last winter. The deal also includes a $13 million club option for 2030.

At the time of signing, Edman still had one year of control left on the two-year arbitration extension he signed with the St. Louis Cardinals.

The Dodgers rewarded him with a new contract following his National League Championship Series MVP performance against the New York Mets in 2024. Edman hit .407/.393/.630 with three doubles, one homer and 11 RBI in that series.

Dodgers optimistic with Tommy Edman

Dodgers general manager Brandon Gomes and manager Dave Roberts have both expressed confidence in Edman getting back to health after having ankle surgery. Gomes revealed the procedure was a debridement.

Edman will likely be limited at the start of Spring Training but the anticipation is he’ll be back to filling a versatile role in the regular season.
