The Los Angeles Dodgers endured a rough start to their homestand as Gavin Stone was put on the 15-day injured list because of right shoulder inflammation and Teoscar Hernández was removed from the series opener after being hit by a pitch.
Hernández was hit in the left foot by an 81 mph slider from Matthew Boyd, which immediately sent him down the ground in pain. He attempted to remain in the game but gingerly walked off the field with Dodgers manager Dave Roberts and head athletic trainer Thomas Albert after jogging down the first-base line.
“Not great,” answered Roberts when asked for an update on Hernández following the Dodgers’ loss to the Cleveland Guardians.
“Scans, X-ray was negative. We’re going to get some scans tomorrow just to kind of dig in a little bit more and get some information. He’s as tough as they come, and he could barely move his foot. So I don’t see how it’s not going to be an IL, but I’m sure we’re going to give it a couple days to kind of see how he comes out.”
Roberts added Hernández was indeed hit by the pitch in his foot, not the ankle.
Assuming the Dodgers place Hernández on the 10-day injured list in the near future, that could create an opportunity for James Outman or Dalton Rushing. One advantage Outman has is already being on the Dodgers’ 40-man roster. However, Rushing has played all but one game in left field during his time with Triple-A Oklahoma City thus far.
Dodgers worried about Teoscar Hernández
In addition to Hernández not being able to continue playing Friday, he continued to deal with lingering discomfort after exiting.
“It’s high,” answered Roberts when asked for his level of concern. “He doesn’t come out of games, and just afterward, typically it subsides with the pain. But it didn’t, so it’s concerning.”
