The Los Angeles Dodgers overcame an early deficit to defeat the Chicago White Sox in their 2017 Cactus League opener. Clayton Kershaw turned in one scoreless inning of work, while Brett Eibner, Yasmani Grandal and Justin Turner led the offensive attack.
Alex Wood was knocked around in the second inning, allowing back-to-back singles with nobody out. A wild pitch allowed both runners to advance, and the White Sox took a 1-0 lead on an RBI groundout. Yolmer Sanchez added a run on a sacrifice fly before Wood managed to get out of the inning.
White Sox relief pitcher Chris Beck failed to follow in the footsteps of Carson Fulmer, who held the Dodgers scoreless over two innings.
Logan Forsythe doubled with one out, Corey Seager drew a walk, and Justin Turner followed with an RBI single. Yasmani Grandal then tied the game and improved to 2-for-2 on the day with a booming RBI double.
Franklin Gutierrez’s RBI groundout gave the Dodgers a 3-2 lead, though the White Sox responded with one run against Josh Ravin in the fourth.
Brett Eibner, who replaced Yasiel Puig in right field, hit a go-ahead, solo home run in the sixth inning, and Scott Van Slyke’s RBI single tacked on an insurance run in the seventh.
