The Los Angeles Dodgers entered Spring Training with an abundance of options for the backend of their starting rotation.
Tony Gonsolin, Dustin May and Bobby Miller are all competing for the fifth spot, creating an intriguing battle as camp progresses.
Each has pitched at a high level in the past, but all three also have something to prove after injuries impacted their 2024 seasons.
While any of them could be deserving of the role, only one can claim it, though that hasn’t created tension among them.
“They’ve handled it really well,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. “Right now, their mindset is to take care of their own business and pitch well. As we get further into Spring Training, it gets a little bit more anxious, obviously.
“But I hope they can all keep that same mindset because things can change in an instant. The most important thing is controlling what they can. That’s part of being in this organization—there’s a lot of talent, a lot of depth. But if they’re healthy and perform, each guy is going to be called on.”
Gonsolin appears to be the frontrunner, as he seemingly finished the 2024 season healthy. In 2022, he posted a dominant 16-1 record with a 2.14 ERA and 0.87 WHIP, proving he can be a top-tier starter when at his best.
The Dodgers’ rotation is expected to be anchored by their frontend starters, and with the luxury of Minor League options, Miller seems likely to begin the season at Triple-A Oklahoma City.
Furthermore, he could be slowed moving forward due to being hit in the head by a comebacker.
As for May, he is as healthy as he’s been in years, but has never thrown more than 60 innings in a single Major League season. While he has the potential to be a high-impact starter, durability remains a question. A bullpen role could be an option, though his upside as a starter is undeniable.
Dustin May feeling good in sixth season with Dodgers
May previously underwent UCL and flexor tendon surgery on his right elbow, along with an esophageal tear that ended his return efforts.
The 27-year-old has the raw talent to be an elite pitcher, but injuries have prevented him from logging significant innings. Now, he says he feels the best he has in a long time and is ready to be an impactful arm for the Dodgers in 2025.
