Dodgers Spring Training: Cody Bellinger In ‘Great Spot’ Ahead Of Cactus League Debut

As the Los Angeles Dodgers continue with their third week of Cactus League play, Cody Bellinger has yet to take the field for a game.

Though, that is about to change as the current plan is for the 25-year-old to make his 2021 debut on Tuesday against the Milwaukee Brewers. “Center field, and we’ll see how he responds,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. “We get him to DH or something like that on Wednesday.”

How often Bellinger plays for the remainder of the spring will depend on where he is at health-wise. “It’s more of how he feels,” Roberts noted.

“I’m not sure of his rehab progression, so I doubt every day in the field. But the goal still is to get him ready for Opening Day. Whatever that looks like.”

Bellinger is on the mend from offseason shoulder surgery, and to this point, has largely been limited to participating in fielding and baserunning during workouts. He only recently advanced to taking batting practice and swings in “B” games.

Despite this, Roberts has been impressed with Bellinger’s quality of at-bats and swings in camp. “I think really good,” Roberts said. “Especially considering he hasn’t seen live pitching in quite some time. I think he’s in a great spot where he’s at.”

In terms of mechanics, Roberts noted that Bellinger’s batting stance has changed some compared to last season. “He’s a little bit more open than he was to finish last year, but that’s kind of intentional,” Roberts said.

“He’s getting off good swings and seeing the baseball really well.”

Roberts names Clayton Kershaw Dodgers’ Opening Day starter

In other news, Roberts named Clayton Kershaw the Dodgers’ 2021 Opening Day starter. For the left-hander, it will mark a franchise-record ninth time getting to start the first game of the season.

“I think we all talked collectively, and there’s really no wrong decision. I just feel that he’s earned it, he’s the right guy for the spot for 2021,” Roberts explained.

“For every reason I think it just makes the most sense.”
