Dodgers Sign Ty Kelly, Who Has ‘Never Liked Or Rooted For The Giants’

The Los Angeles Dodgers have signed Ty Kelly to Minor League contract, which the 33-year-old revealed on Twitter by also mentioning he has never been fond of the San Francisco Giants, Tim Lincecum or Buster Posey.

Of course, Lincecum has been retired for multiple years and Posey joined him after the 2021 postseason with a surprise announcement.

Kelly was selected by the Baltimore Orioles in the 13th round of the 2009 MLB Draft, but was with three other organizations before making his MLB debut with the New York Mets in 2016.

Coincidentally, the Seattle Mariners traded Kelly to the St. Louis Cardinals for Sam Gaviglio, who signed a Minor League contract with the Dodgers in January.

Kelly has played sparingly at the Major League level, appearing in a combined 118 games for the Mets and Philadelphia Phillies over parts of three seasons from 2016-18. Kelly’s biggest opportunity came with the Phillies, when he played in 69 games in 2017.

However, Kelly struggled to find much success at the plate as he hit just .193/.260/.341 with seven doubles, two home runs and 14 RBI with Philadelphia.

Kelly’s journey included signing with the L.A. Angels in February 2019, only to retire five months later. He returned to baseball last year by signing a Minor League contract with the Seattle Mariners.

Kelly hit .227/.337/.333 with two doubles, two home runs and 10 RBI over 24 games for Triple-A Tacoma. His time in the Mariners’ farm system came to an end in June and led to signing with the Long Island Ducks of the Atlantic League.

The switch-hitter batted .298/.431/.386 with 10 doubles and eight RBI over 38 games with the Ducks.

How does Kelly fit with Dodgers?

Kelly presumably will begin the season with Triple-A Oklahoma City and be among the players the Dodgers potentially call on at some point throughout the year in event of an injury or needed depth.

Kelly has primarily played second base, third base and left field.
