Shohei Ohtani is one of the biggest stars in all of sports and has collaborated with different brands over the years due to his popularity.
On Monday, Ohtani became the first baseball player to join the Fortnite Icon Series by receiving two “skins” and other cosmetics that players can use across various game modes.
Fortnite is an online multiplayer game by developer Epic Games that first rose to prominence with the release of its battle royal game mode in 2017.
Ohtani said he is honored to become the latest athlete to join the globally known game, via Tom Verducci of Sports Illustrated:
“Honestly, I’m very honored,” Ohtani says. “Obviously, there are so many great players out there, and to be chosen as the ambassador of this globally well-known game, it’s truly an honor.”
The first skin depicts Ohtani in his Los Angeles Dodgers uniform in three styles: home white, road gray and a LEGO Style for LEGO Fortnite, which is its own game mode. Other Ohtani-related cosmetics include a custom pickaxe and Decoy backpack — a bobblehead based on his dog.
The second skin is Ohtani in a high heat samurai suit, a nod to the upcoming Tokyo Series and his Japanese heritage. It is a reactive skin that will see Ohtani’s pitching arm become fiery after the player records eliminations in a match.
Both Ohtani skins will be available through separate Fortnite bundles available for purchase beginning at 5 p.m. PT on March 17.
