Shohei Ohtani’s Records & MLB History With 2024 NL MVP Award

Shohei Ohtani was voted the unanimous winner of the 2024 National League MVP Award, punctuating what was a wildly successful and impressive first season with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Despite ill-fated claims late in the year that New York Mets All-Star Francisco Lindor had entered the NL MVP conversation, Ohtani deservingly ran away with the award behind a record-setting season.

Lindor garnered 23 second-place votes and seven for third place. Lindor’s 263 overall points had him finish second in NL MVP voting but ahead of Arizona Diamondbacks’ Ketel Marte, who had 229 points.

Ohtani led all NL players in home runs (54), RBI (130) and on-base plus slugging percentage (1.036). He also finished with a career-best 59 stolen bases en route to becoming the first player in MLB history to have a 50-50 season.

Ohtani winning the NL MVP Award amounted to setting multiple records and making MLB history.

First full-time DH

Prior to Ohtani, no full-time designated hitter had ever won MVP in either league. Opportunities of course have been much more limited in the NL, which didn’t adopt the NL on a permanent basis until the 2022 season.

Unanimous Dodgers MVP

Ohtani is the first player in Dodgers history to unanimously win an MVP Award. Overall, the Dodgers have 13 MVP winners in franchise history.

Ohtani’s unanimous MVPs

Remarkably, all three of Ohtani’s career MVP Awards have been won in unanimous fashion. He’s the only player to accomplish that feat at least two times.

Ohtani previously won American League MVP while with the Los Angeles Angels in 2021 and 2023.

International MVPs

Ohtani is the first player to ever win the MVP in three different leagues – AL, NL and Pacific (NPB).
