Dodgers Rumors: Tommy Edman Contract Extension Discussed

The Los Angeles Dodgers undeniably struck gold at the 2024 MLB trade deadline by acquiring Tommy Edman, Michael Kopech and Jack Flaherty to address pressing needs on their roster.

However, at the time of the trades, Edman was still on the 60-day injured list while recovering from a sprained left ankle he sustained during a rehab assignment for offseason right wrist surgery.

Edman’s 2024 and Dodgers debut didn’t come until the middle of August, but he proceeded to make quite the impact.

According to Jon Morosi of MLB Network, the Dodgers have discussed a contract extension with Edman’s agent:

Hearing the Dodgers have had preliminary dialogue with Tommy Edman’s camp about a contract extension. He is due to be a FA after 2025.

Beyond the versatility Edman brought to the Dodgers roster, another added benefit was being under team control for the 2025 season as well. That also applies to Kopech, but Flaherty is a free agent.

Edman hit .237/.294/.417 with five doubles, six home runs and 20 RBI over 37 games with the Dodgers this past season. He then became their everyday shortstop during the postseason while Miguel Rojas missed time because of an adductor/sports hernia injury, and emerged as a power threat.

Edman slugged his way to earning National League Championship Series MVP honors by batting .409/.391/.500 with two doubles and seven RBI over six games against the New York Mets. Edman hit safely in every NLCS game.

He capped that stretch off by going 2-for-5 with a double and home run in the Dodgers’ pennant-clinching win at Dodger Stadium.

How Dodgers traded for Tommy Edman

Edman had long been a coveted by the Dodgers front office, and general manager Brandon Gomes needed to spur into action at the deadline in order to acquire him.

Upon learning that the St. Louis Cardinals were on the verge of sending Edman to the Chicago White Sox, Gomes got in contact with them in order to facilitate a three-team trade.
