Dodgers Rumors: Josh Byrnes Hired As News Rockies General Manager

The Los Angeles Dodgers have been MLB’s most successful franchise over the last decade, and they’ve established a dynasty in the 2020s with three World Series championships.

Part of that is due to their financial strength, but they’ve also been one of the most well-run organizations in sports, which has led to other teams trying to copy their formula. Under president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman, Dodgers front office executives have often been sought after by opposing clubs looking for new general managers and leadership.

Among the top candidates have been Josh Byrnes, Brandon Gomes, Alex Anthopoulos and Farhan Zaidi. Anthopoulos and Zaidi previously received other jobs, while Byrnes and Gomes had remained with the Dodgers.

But now Byrnes has become the latest Dodgers executive to land a new job leading another organization, as he is now joining the Colorado Rockies as their general manager, according to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic:

Josh Byrnes, former Diamondbacks and Padres general manager, will be the Rockies GM under president of baseball operations Paul DePodesta, sources tell me and @dennistlin. Byrnes has been the Dodgers’ senior vice president of baseball operations since 2014.

— Ken Rosenthal (@Ken_Rosenthal) December 3, 2025

Byrnes was previously contacted by the Washington Nationals about their GM vacancy earlier this year, and he was a candidate to become the Detroit Tigers’ president of baseball operations before they hired Scott Harris. In addition, the Boston Red Sox also considered hiring Byrnes previously.

Byrnes spent 11 seasons as the Dodgers’ senior vice president of baseball operations, where he supervised the club’s scouting and player development.

Since his first season in 2015, the Dodgers have posted the best record in baseball, winning eight division titles, five National League pennants and the 2020, 2024 and 2025 world championships.

Josh Brynes’ baseball executive career

He previously served as executive vice president/general manager for two of the Dodgers’ NL West rivals, the Arizona Diamondbacks (October 2005-July 2010) and San Diego Padres (October 2011-June 2014). Byrnes now comes closer to completing a full NL West tour, only missing a stint with the San Francisco Giants.

Byrnes began his baseball front office career in 1994 with the then-Cleveland Indians, working as an advanced scout in 1995-1996 before being promoted to director of scouting in June 1998. In fall of 1999, Byrnes became assistant general manager of the Rockies and moved to the Red Sox in the same role for the 2003-2005 seasons, helping them to the 2004 World Series title.

Originally from Washington, D.C., Byrnes attended Haverford (PA) College, where he established school career records in home runs and RBI.
