The Los Angeles Dodgers have patched together their starting rotation over recent weeks as injuries mounted and some fell short of expectations.
It’s amounted to multiple bullpen games, and the likes of Landon Knack and Justin Wrobleski receiving opportunities to fill in. On Sunday, the Dodgers started Brent Honeywell in a bullpen game one day after claiming him off waivers.
The team hopes to activate Tyler Glasnow off the 15-day injured list coming out of the All-Star break and Clayton Kershaw may not be far behind.
According to Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic, Dodgers pitching prospect River Ryan is expected to called up from Triple-A Oklahoma City during the second half as well:
The organization’s pitching plans coming out of the break will include the organization’s top pitching prospect: the Dodgers are anticipating calling up 25-year-old right-hander River Ryan, league sources told The Athletic.
With the Dodgers planning to add Ryan to their rotation, it suggests Bobby Miller could be in line to spend multiple weeks with Oklahoma City. He was demoted to the Minor Leagues last week amid ongoing struggles and to take time working with the organization’s pitching coaches.
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said the team had not yet set any sort of timeline for Miller’s return to the rotation.
Meanwhile, Ryan has made seven starts this season with the Arizona Complex League Dodgers (one), Single-A Rancho Cucamonga (one) and Oklahoma City Baseball Club (five). His start to the year was delayed due to right shoulder fatigue that prevented the 25-year-old from pitching during Spring Training.
Ryan would potentially make four Dodgers rookies in the rotation, along with Gavin Stone, Knack and Wrobleski.

Ryan was drafted by the San Diego Padres as an infielder but traded to the Dodgers for Matt Beaty. Ryan converted to pitcher after joining the Dodgers organization.
He’s since emerged as the top Dodgers pitching prospect and like Wrobleski, been a fast riser that now has him fast-tracked for an MLB debut this year.
