One of the biggest storylines heading into the MLB offseason is the staggering amount of managerial vacancies that need to be filled. Despite an earlier-than-expected postseason exit, the Los Angeles Dodgers opted against making a change and remain committed to manager Dave Roberts.

Four teams are currently in the process of finding a new skipper while four others have already reached a resolution. The Los Angeles Angels most notably hired Joe Maddon to replace Brad Ausmus, who lasted just one year on the job.

Other hires thus far include David Ross to the Chicago Cubs, Joe Girardi to the Philadelphia Phillies and Jayce Tingler to the San Diego Padres. The Kansas City Royals, New York Mets, Pittsburgh Pirates and San Francisco Giants remain on the lookout for a new manager.

The Pirates in particular have cast a wide net in their search, reportedly interviewing the likes of Jeff Banister, Ryan Christenson, Joey Cora, Mark Kotsay and Matt Quatraro.

According to Craig Mish of FNTSY Sports Radio, Dodgers first base coach George Lombard is also under consideration for the Pirates’ managerial opening:

Lombard joined the Dodgers in December 2015 as part of Roberts’ initial coaching staff. He has served as the club’s first-base coach since the 2016 season.

Prior to being hired by the Dodgers, Lombard enjoyed a six-year playing career in the big leagues. After being released by the Cleveland Indians in 2009, he took his first coaching gig as the hitting coach for the Lowell Spinners — the Short-Season A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox.

Lombard later served as manager of the Rookie-level Gulf Coast Red Sox from 2011–12, which represents his only managerial experience to date. He was then promoted by the Red Sox to roving outfield and base running coordinator throughout the team’s Minor League system before being hired by the Braves in September 2015 to fill the same role.

In addition to Lombard, Dodgers bench coach Bob Geren has garnered interest this offseason and may be a candidate to replace Bruce Bochy as Giants manager.
