The Los Angeles Dodgers entered the 2018 season with one of the better farm systems in all of baseball, headlined by rookie pitcher Walker Buehler, who has thrived in the starting rotation with an increased workload at the Major League level.
Buehler has since graduated from prospect status with 62 innings under his belt thus far, but the Dodgers’ farm system remains flush with other highly-regarded arms as well.
Right-hander Dustin May, in particular, has taken the next step in his career this season, which led to him being ranked among the top-100 prospects in MLB Pipeline’s midseason update.
In his last two starts at the Dodgers’ High-A Minor League affiliate, the 20-year-old allowed only five runs over 14.2 innings pitched (3.05 ERA) with 10 strikeouts against three walks.
With that recent stretch of success, Los Angeles has decided to promote May to Double-A Tulsa, via J.P. Hoornstra of the Southern California News Group:
The Dodgers are promoting pitcher Dustin May, one of the top prospects in their organization, to Double-A Tulsa.
May made 17 starts for the Quakes, going 7-3 with a 3.29 ERA and 1.10 WHIP in 98.1 innings pitched. He held opponents to a .241/.286/.354 batting line and struck out 94 to just 17 walks.
With the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline just over 24 hours away (1 p.m. PT), May has been coveted in trade discussions around the Majors. To this point, however, the Dodgers have shown restraint in ultimately dealing him.
That was especially evident when the club refused to include him in the prospect package sent to the Baltimore Orioles for All-Star shortstop Manny Machado.
