The Los Angeles Dodgers signed several high-profile players in free agency and are now poised for even more success in 2025 as they look to repeat as World Series champions.
However, one piece of business that had still not been taken care of is a new contract extension for manager Dave Roberts. He was entering the final season of a three-year extension signed in March 2022.
The Dodgers have won the National League West eight times under Roberts, to go along with four pennants and two World Series titles. Negotiations are well underway and it seemed inevitable that the sides would eventually reach a new deal.
According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, Roberts has agreed to a four-year extension with a salary of just over $8 million per year:
@JonHeyman: Breaking, Dave Roberts and Dodgers have agreed to a new deal. 4 years total (so 3 extra years) at record rate, so slightly over $8M per year. Announcement expected within a day or two.
@JonHeyman: Roberts’new Dodgers deal is believed to be for $32.4M for 4 years @Joelsherman1 and I learned. Roberts has won 2 World Series and is the winningest manager by percentage at .627 (minimum 1,000 games)
Roberts has now signed three contract extensions during his tenure as Dodgers manager. In 2018, he agreed to a four-year extension ahead of the Winter Meetings. Then in 2022, Roberts signed a three-year extension two weeks before the start of the regular season.
Roberts has guided the Dodgers to at least 90 wins in every full year as manager. The lone exception was the shortened 2020 season, when he led the team to the Majors’ best record at 43-17.
Among all-time Dodgers managers, Roberts is fourth in total wins. Ahead of him are Walter Alston (2,040), Tommy Lasorda (1,599) and Wilbert Robinson (1,375). Roberts is entering the 2025 season at 851 managerial wins.
Roberts’ career .627 winning percentage is the highest of any manager in MLB history (minimum 315 games). It’s bested only by Negro League managers Bullet Rogan (.698), Vic Harris (.663) and Rube Foster (.633).
Dave Roberts becomes highest-paid manager
Roberts’ new contract extension with the Dodgers makes him the highest-paid manager in MLB history. by average annual value, surpassing Craig Counsell, who signed a five-year, $40 million deal with the Chicago Cubs last year.
Roberts recently said that was not a focus of his during negotiations but that he was seeking value in a new Dodgers contract.
