Dodgers Rumors: Brent Honeywell Claimed Off Waivers

The Los Angeles Dodgers pitching staff has been impacted not only by several injuries throughout the season but also expected contributors struggling, which in turn has led to an overworked bullpen.

Although the Dodgers are on the verge of entering the All-Star break, they face the prospect of a potential bullpen game in the series finale against the Detroit Tigers because of being a starter short.

One potential option to help get through the day and perhaps serve as organizational depth moving forward in Brent Honeywell.

According to Mark Feinsand of MLB.com, the Dodgers claimed Honeywell off waivers from the Pittsburgh Pirates:

Honeywell was designated for assignment by the Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday as a corresponding move to activating Marco Gonzales off the 60-day injured list.

The right-hander spent less than one week up with the Pirates and only appeared in two games. Honeywell threw a scoreless inning in his 2024 debut and allowed one run over 2.1 innings on July 10.

Honeywell joining the Dodgers organization represents a reunion with president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman. The Tampa Bay Rays selected Honeywell in the second round of the 2014 MLB Draft, months before Friedman was hired to lead the Dodgers front office.

Brent Honeywell’s Minor League stats

While with the Pirates’ Triple-A Indianapolis affiliate this season, Honeywell went 1-3 with a 4.85 ERA and 1.36 WHIP in 31 games. He pitched to a 19.6% strikeout rate and 10.1% walk rate in those appearances.

Overall in his Minor League career, the 29-year-old is 37-30 with nine saves and a 3.43 ERA in 158 games (97 starts) over parts of eight seasons.

Honeywell’s career has included four right elbow surgeries since 2017. Those procedures have been Tommy John surgery, ulnar nerve decompression, operation to repair and stabilize a fracture in his elbow, and an arthroscopic procedure that the Rays described was “to relieve mild discomfort.”

Honeywell is out of Minor League options, which would require the Dodgers to DFA him if he’s added to the active roster and needs to be removed at some point.
