Due to their run of success over the past eight years, the Los Angeles Dodgers have become a popular team for others in need of a new general manager, coach or front office personnel.

Senior vice president of baseball operations Josh Byrnes and assistant general manager Brandon Gomes have been the most popular names within the Dodgers’ organization, and they also lost Great Lakes Loons hitting coach David Popkins to the Minnesota Twins this offseason.

Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman recently said he expected the entire Major League coaching staff to return in 2022, but those plans could change based on the latest repots.

Dodgers bench coach Bob Geren is once again being considered by the New York Mets for their manager opening and will interview for the position, according to Andy Martino of SportsNet New York:

Add another Mets managerial candidate. Bob Geren will interview this week, per source. Former Mets bench coach who has been in that role with Dodgers through their run of success.

— Andy Martino (@martinonyc) December 7, 2021

Geren worked as the Mets bench coach from 2012-15 before being hired by the Dodgers. He was previously considered for the Mets manager job in 2017 before they opted to hire Mickey Callaway to lead their franchise. Since then, the Mets have had three different managers.

Callaway was fired after the 2019 season and later banned from baseball through the end of 2022 for sexual harassment. New York then parted ways with Carlos Beltran after his role in the Houston Astros’ sign-stealing scandal was revealed prior to him managing a single game, and they declined to pick up the option on Luis Rojas following the end of the 2021 season.

Geren also interviewed with the San Francisco Giants for their managerial opening before they hired Gabe Kapler, but he was not among the finalists for the job.

Geren’s managerial experience

Geren was a skipper in the Oakland Athletics Minor League system for four years and was named manager of the A’s in 2007. He guided them to a 334-376 record (.470 winning percentage) over parts of four seasons.

Oakland’s best season under Geren was an 81-81 record and second-place finish in the American League West in 2010; he was fired 63 games into the 2011 campaign.

He has been working as the Dodgers bench coach since 2016 and has been praised for his knowledge and preparation. Geren is also said to be well-versed in the use of advanced stats.
