Dodgers Roster: Zack Burdi Claimed From Rays; Tyler Cyr Transferred To 60-Day Injured List

The Los Angeles Dodgers claimed Zack Burdi off waivers from the Tampa Bay Rays and transferred Tyler Cyr to the 60-day injured list in order to make room on their 40-man roster.

Cyr was among multiple relief pitchers the Dodgers signed to a Minor League contract during the offseason. He joined the team as a non-roster invitee to 2023 Spring Training and went on to begin the season with Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Cyr had his contract selected on May 19 when Andre Jackson was optioned to OKC. He appeared in back-to-back games against the St. Louis Cardinals, throwing a combined 1.2 innings and allowing just one hit while collecting two strikeouts in those appearances.

The Dodgers then placed Cyr on the 15-day IL on Tuesday due to a right shoulder impingement. That was backdated to May 21, but in now getting transferred to the 60-day IL, Cyr isn’t eligible to return until after the All-Star break.

That has more of an impact on the Oklahoma City Dodgers, who Cyr has appeared in 15 games for so far this year. He’s 2-1 with a 4.86 ERA and 1.62 WHIP.

Cyr was selected by the San Francisco Giants in the 10th round of the 2015 MLB Draft. The right-hander made his debut last year with the Philadelphia Phillies, but only appeared in one game before getting designated for assignment the following day.

The Oakland Athletics claimed Cyr off waivers and provided him with more of an opportunity. The 29-year-old went 1-0 with a 2.08 ERA, 3.04 FIP and 1.08 WHIP in 11 games for the A’s.

Zack Burdi makes easy jump from Rays to Dodgers

The Dodgers claiming Burdi occurred on the same day as their three-game series with the Rays beginning at Tropicana Field.

Burdi was DFA’d Wednesday for a second time this season. He cleared waivers and accepted an outright assignment to Triple-A Durham the first instance.

Burdi made his MLB debut with the Chicago White Sox in 2020 and spent a portion of the following year with them and Baltimore Orioles.

He didn’t pitch in the Majors last season and only appeared in three games for the Rays this year. Burdi pitched a combined three scoreless innings in his first two appearances before allowing six runs (five earned) in a blowout loss to the Toronto Blue Jays earlier this week.

Burdi was teammates with Will Smith at the University of Louisville, and got picked six spots ahead of the Dodgers’ catcher in the first round of the 2016 MLB Draft at No. 26 overall.
