The Los Angeles Dodgers began their All-Star break on Sunday but still made multiple roster moves, which included Yency Almonte returning from the paternity list and Bryan Hudson getting optioned to Triple-A Oklahoma City.
Almonte began his paternity leave last Thursday, during which time the Dodgers recalled Alex Vesia to take his roster spot. Hudson was the corresponding move to the Dodgers optioning Gavin Stone on July 5.
MLB roster rules state a player that goes on the paternity list is required to miss a minimum of one day but can’t be away from the team for more than three days. Thus, the Dodgers were required to activate Almonte despite it being a scheduled off day for the team.
Almonte is 3-1 with a 5.15 ERA and 1.39 WHIP in 38 games this season. He’s been inconsistent throughout much of the year but is currently in the midst of nine consecutive appearances without allowing an earned run.
Hudson was sent back to the Minors one day after throwing 30 pitches and allowing one run over 1.2 innings. Hudson retired the side in order in the eighth but labored in the ninth inning and only managed to get two outs.
That prompted Dodgers manager Dave Roberts to turn to Evan Phillips, who ended the game by striking out Hunter Renfroe on three pitches.
Hudson has made one relief appearance in both of his stints up with the Dodgers this season. The 26-year-old made his MLB debut against the San Francisco Giants on June 17.
During his time with Oklahoma City, the left-handed reliever has gone 4-0 with a 1.83 ERA and 1.17 WHIP across 29 games (two starts).
In addition to Hudson, Dodgers Minor Leaguers to make their MLB debut during the 2023 season are Michael Busch (April 25), Gavin Stone (May 3), Bobby Miller (May 23), Jonny DeLuca (June 7), Nick Robertson (June 7) and Emmet Sheehan (June 16).

Almonte joined Dodgers teammates Caleb Ferguson, Brusdar Graterol and Evan Phillips in becoming a first-time father this season. Chris Taylor will soon join that list, while Mookie Betts and his wife Brianna welcomed the couple’s second child, and so too did Max Muncy and his spouse Kellie.
