The Atlanta Braves claimed Rylan Bannon off waivers from the Los Angeles Dodgers and optioned him to Triple-A Gwinnett. Bannon was designated for assignment last week when Tony Wolters had his contract selected from Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Bannon’s latest stint with the Dodgers organization lasted all of eight days. He was claimed off waivers from the Baltimore Orioles, with whom the 26-year-old enjoyed a productive 2019 Minor League season with.

Appearing at two levels, Bannon hit a combined .266/.345/.421 with 32 doubles, 11 home runs and 59 RBI. He was added to the Orioles’ 40-man roster that winter in order to protect him from potentially getting selected in the 2020 Rule 5 Draft.

Bannon did not play in 2020 due to the Minor League season getting canceled, but made his MLB debut with the Orioles this year. He appeared in four games, going 2-for-14 with five strikeouts. He batted .229/.347/.407 with 14 doubles, 11 home runs and 58 RBI over 78 games with Triple-A Norfolk.

Upon claiming Bannon off waivers, the Dodgers assigned him to Triple-A Oklahoma City. He never appeared in a game for the affiliate nor was a likely candidate to reach the Major League roster with L.A.

“I don’t think that’s in the plan,” manager Dave Roberts answered last week when asked if Bannon was a candidate to be recalled. “Anything can happen, but I don’t think that’s on our radar right now.”

Dodgers included Bannon in trade for Machado

Bannon getting claimed by the Dodgers last week represented a return to the organization that picked him in the eighth round of the 2017 MLB Draft.

One year later, Bannon was included in the July 2018 trade for Manny Machado. In addition to Bannon, Baltimore received Yusniel Díaz, Dean Kremer, Breyvic Valera and Zach Pop.

Díaz is still with the Orioles organization and made his MLB debut this season, Kremer has been up with Baltimore over parts of three seasons since 2020, Valera has been part of multiple teams and was released by the Toronto Blue Jays last year, and Pop broke into the Majors with the Miami Marlins last season but was traded at the 2022 deadline.
