Dodgers Roster: Nick Ahmed Elects Free Agency After Clearing Waivers

Nick Ahmed rejected an assignment to Triple-A Oklahoma City after clearing waivers and now is a free agent for the second time this season. He held that right due to already being removed from a 40-man roster once before.

Ahmed was designated for assignment by the Los Angeles Dodgers on Monday as the corresponding move to Tommy Edman being reinstated off the 60-day injured list. He joined Cavan Biggio, Amed Rosario and Brent Honeywell as players DFA’d by the Dodgers during August.

That list grew to include Jason Heyward on Thursday, as the Dodgers activated Chris Taylor off the 10-day IL.

Biggio was released from the organization and remains a free agent, Rosario was claimed by the Cincinnati Reds, and Honeywell accepted a Minor League assignment to remain in the Dodgers organization. Heyward is still going through the waivers process.

For Ahmed, it was a second time being designated for assignment this season. The first instance was by the San Francisco Giants, who subsequently released the veteran after he cleared waivers.

The Giants had a changing of the guard at shortstop this season as they didn’t re-sign Brandon Crawford in order to provide opportunities to Marco Luciano and Casey Schmitt. Ahmed signed a Minor League contract with the Giants but won the starting shortstop job out of Spring Training.

Ahmed being released by the Giants paved the way to his signing with the Dodgers on July 24 as they looked to shore up shortstop in the wake of Miguel Rojas going on the 10-day injured list with a right forearm strain and Mookie Betts still being out.

Ahmed hit .229/.245/.292 with one home run and two RBI over 17 games (13 starts) with the Dodgers. His home run was against the Giants and helped the Dodgers earn a series win just three games into his time with the team.

“I’ve got a lot of great friends and teammates over there that I love. Those are good guys, but now I’m trying to beat them,” Ahmed said. “So it’s a lot of fun. It’s funny how the timing worked out and just excited to help us win a game today.”

Nick Ahmed’s outlook

If Ahmed signs with a team before Sept. 1, he would be eligible to play in the postseason this year.
