The Los Angeles Dodgers selected the contract of Nabil Crismatt and optioned Kyle Hurt to Triple-A Oklahoma City prior to Sunday’s series finale against the St. Louis Cardinals.
Emmet Sheehan was transferred to the 60-day injured list in order to make room for Crismatt on the Dodgers’ 40-man roster. The earliest date Sheehan can be activated is now May 18. He began the season on the 15-day IL because of right forearm inflammation.
Hurt heads to the Minors one day after throwing 2.2 innings out of the bullpen. Hurt made the Dodgers’ Opening Day roster in South Korea and remained with the team once their 2024 schedule resumed stateside due to Brusdar Graterol and Blake Treinen both being on the 15-day IL.
Hurt made his MLB debut with the Dodgers last season and although his three career appearances at the big league level have all come out of the bullpen, manager Dave Roberts made it clear the organization views the right-hander as a starter.
Hurt won the Dodgers’ 2023 Branch Rickey Minor League Pitcher of the Year Award.
When did Nabil Crismatt join Dodgers?
The Dodgers signed Crismatt to a Minor League contract with a non-roster invite to Spring Training last December.
He pitched to mixed results in six Cactus League games, allowing a run in three of those appearances. Crismatt finished the spring with an 8.44 ERA and 2.06 WHIP while allowing opponents to bat .286. He began the season with Triple-A Oklahoma City but had yet to pitch for them.
Crismatt made his MLB debut with the Cardinals in 2020 and was with the Padres from 2021-2023. San Diego designated him for assignment last June, at which point he elected free agency after going unclaimed on waivers.
That led to signing a Minor League contract with the Arizona Diamondbacks, though Crismatt made just one appearance before finishing the season with Triple-A Reno. Included during that stretch was opting out of his original contract but re-signing with the Diamondbacks on a new Minor League deal.
The 28-year-old then was among the players who elected for Minor League free agency after the 2023 season concluded.
During his time with the Padres and Diamondbacks last year, Crismatt went a combined 0-2 with an 8.31 ERA and 2.00 WHIP in eight appearances. Crismatt also struggled with the Reno Aces, going 4-3 with a 6.85 ERA in 14 games (nine starts).
