Dodgers Roster: Mitch White Activated & Justin Bruihl Recalled; Caleb Ferguson Optioned

Along with recalling Ryan Pepiot to be the 27th man on the active roster for Tuesday’s doubleheader, the Los Angeles Dodgers also activated Mitch White off the COVID-19 injured list and recalled Justin Bruihl from Triple-A Oklahoma City prior to the afternoon game.

Caleb Ferguson was optioned and Tommy Kahnle was placed on the 15-day injured list due to right forearm inflammation. Blake Treinen was transferred to the 60-day IL in order to make room on the 40-man roster for White.

White had been out since April 30, and although he reported to Triple-A Oklahoma City to begin building back up, the right-hander never appeared in a game for any Minor League affiliate as part of a rehab assignment.

White was back in the Dodgers clubhouse before the series opener against the Diamondbacks on Monday. He’s appeared in four games so far this season, pitching to a 4.50 ERA and 1.13 WHIP. White is 2-3 with a 3.59 ERA in 27 games (four starts) over parts of three seasons with L.A.

Bruihl earned a spot on the Dodgers’ Opening Day roster and appeared in eight games prior to getting optioned to Oklahoma City on May 8. It was largely driven by L.A. needing to get their active roster back down to 26 players after playing a doubleheader against the Chicago Cubs.

Bruihl getting optioned temporarily kept Robbie Erlin on the active roster, though he was then designated for assignment on May 11 as the corresponding move to the Dodgers calling up Pepiot for his MLB debut.

Bruihl has allowed three runs and collected six strikeouts in eight innings pitched for the Dodgers this season. He went 0-1 with a 2.89 ERA in 21 games (two starts) with L.A. last year, and drew a walk in his only plate appearance to finish with a 1.000 on-base percentage that went into the record books due to the National League adopting the designated hitter.

Ferguson’s brief time with Dodgers

Ferguson is returning to Oklahoma City one day after being activated off the 10-day IL. He appeared in Monday’s win and tossed a scoreless inning in his first game with the Dodgers since undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2020.

“You could see that first hitter, I had a lot of nerves there,” Ferguson admitted. “Couldn’t really feel the ball in my hand. It almost felt like I was making my debut again. But really happy to be back.

“A lot of hard work that went into it. Just got to keep chipping away and keep getting better.”
