Dodgers Call Up Mike Kickham; Dustin May Placed On Injured List

The Los Angeles Dodgers placed Dustin May on the 10-day injured list with a right arm injury and selected the contract of Mike Kickham ahead of Sunday’s series finale against the Milwaukee Brewers. Corey Knebel was transferred to the 60-day IL to add Kickham to the 40-man roster.

Kickham spent last season with the Boston Red Sox organization and appeared in six games (two starts) after having his contract selected. He went 1-1 with a 7.71 ERA and 1.86 WHIP in those games.

Prior to that the left-hander had last been in the Majors with the San Francisco Giants during parts of the 2013 and 2014 seasons. Kickham appeared in a combined 14 games (three starts) over that span, going 0-3 with a 10.98 ERA, 6.02 FIP and 2.14 WHIP.

The 32-year-old elected free agency and went on to sign a Minor League contract with the Dodgers. Kickham started their Cactus League opener this year and finished 1-0 with a 3.38 ERA over four games.

May going to the IL was expected once he was removed from Saturday’s start in the second inning. “He just felt kind of a shooting sensation through his arm on one of those curveballs he threw in the McKinney at-bat,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said after the loss.

“As far as updates, we’re going to get an MRI when we get to Chicago. Remain hopeful, but won’t know until we get that MRI.”

Knebel hopeful to return

May’s injury was the latest in what’s been a wave of them for the Dodgers. The bulk of which have come in the bullpen, and Knebel is among those who was already expected to be out for a prolonged stretch because of a right lat strain.

However, the Dodgers are optimistic he will manage to make a return at some point this season. “It’s going to be a few months looking out,” Roberts said last week. “I don’t want to be specific to a timeline, because I just don’t really know. I don’t think anyone knows.

“Our hope, our expectation is that he will pitch again for us this year.”
