The Los Angeles Dodgers transferred Michael Kopech to the 60-day injured list as part of the corresponding roster moves to activate Tyler Glasnow for his start against the Milwaukee Brewers on Wednesday.
The outing is Glasnow’s first since completing just one inning on April 27 and coming out of the game because of a right shoulder injury.
Alexis Díaz, who was called up from Triple-A Oklahoma City on Tuesday, was optioned back to the Minors in order to make room for Glasnow on the Dodgers’ active roster.
Kopech has appeared in just eight games so far this season, pitching seven scoreless innings while collecting seven strikeouts against four walks. The command issues have carried over from an inconsistent rehab assignment the veteran was on.
When Kopech went on the 15-day injured list with right knee inflammation July 1 (retroactive to June 28), he and Dodgers manager Dave Roberts believed it to only be a minor issue.
Kopech said at the time he was pain-free and explained going on the injured list was more of a precautionary measure to protect against further trouble and potentially compromising his mechanics. Kopech added he underwent an MRI that only showed inflammation, which was treated with a cortisone injection.
“I don’t know the incident that it happened, but getting the shot, hoping the pain, inflammation, is subdued,” Roberts said of Kopech’s knee injury.
“Obviously, putting him on the IL was smart to get ahead of it. I don’t think it will be a long-term situation. He’s going to be able to keep his arm going, so that’s good. I think we’re all hopeful it will be on the shorter end.”
When can Michael Kopech return?
Kopech now is not eligible to be activated until Wednesday, Aug. 27. This marks his second stint on the 60-day IL as he previously was put on May 1 amid a prolonged recovery from of a right shoulder impingement.
That came after Kopech began the season on the 15-day injured list when the Dodgers set their Opening Day roster.
