The Los Angeles Dodgers recalled Matt Sauer from Triple-A Oklahoma City and designated José Ureña for assignment to make room on the active roster. The Dodgers now have an open spot on their 40-man roster.
Ureña was signed exactly one week ago on June 3 to provide some length and innings out of the bullpen.
“He is here for length, and he’s a Major League pitcher, and with where we’re at, things are kind of moving and changing, so we’ll see how he performs,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said when Urena was signed. “But it is nice to have some some coverage on the downside, as far as the length.”
With the Dodgers, the right-hander pitched three innings in two games, allowing one run on four hits with two strikeouts and one walk. Over his MLB career, the 33-year-old holds a 4.78 ERA and 4.90 FIP across 966.2 innings with a 1.40 WHIP, 15.4% strikeout rate and 8.6% walk rate.
He has been in the Majors for parts of 11 seasons, spending the majority of that with the Miami Marlins before stints with the Detroit Tigers, Milwaukee Brewers, Colorado Rockies, Chicago White Sox, Texas Rangers, New York Mets, Toronto Blue Jays and Dodgers.
Matt Sauer re-joins Dodgers
Sauer is back with the Dodgers for the fourth time this season after last joining them in early May when Evan Phillips was placed on the injured list. He was also on the roster for the Tokyo Series to begin the year and got another opportunity with the club as a bulk pitcher in late April.
The right-hander has thrown 20.2 innings for the Dodgers, posting a 3.05 ERA and 4.13 FIP with a 0.92 WHIP, 16.7% strikeout rate and 3.8% walk rate in his opportunities this year.
Last season, he made his Major League debut in 2024 as a member of the Kansas City Royals and went 0-0 with a 7.71 ERA in 14 games.
Sauer figures to pitch in a significant portion of the game on Tuesday, whether it’s as a bulk reliever or starter, and he should stick around with the club given his success and their need for pitching.
