Dodgers Roster: Kirby Yates Placed On Injured List, Lou Trivino Called Up

The Los Angeles Dodgers placed Kirby Yates on the 15-day injured list with a right hamstring strain and selected the contract of Lou Trivino prior to the finale of the Freeway Series on Sunday.

Room on the 40-man roster for Trivino was made with Chris Taylor being released. Tommy Edman took Taylor’s spot on the Dodgers’ active roster.

Yates suffered his hamstring injury in the seventh inning of the Dodgers’ 11-9 loss to the Los Angeles Angels. He entered with the Dodgers clinging to a one-run lead but gave up a three-run homer and retired just one of five batters faced before coming out due to injury.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said after the game the initial belief was Yates sustained a Grade 1 hamstring strain and almost assuredly was bound for the injured list.

The appearance was his 22nd of the season, which is tied with Luis García for second-most among Dodgers relief pitchers. Alex Vesia leads the group with 23 games pitched so far in 2025.

Yates has gone 3-2 with a 4.34 ERA and 1.29 WHIP while allowing 1.45 home runs per nine innings. That’s a noted spike from last year when the veteran enjoyed an All-Star season as the Texas Rangers’ closer.

Trivino is somewhat of a surprising choice to replace Yates, given that Noah Davis, J.P. Feyereisen and Ryan Loutos already were on the Dodgers’ 40-man roster. Feyereisen and Loutos were recently optioned back to Oklahoma City, but could have returned sooner than normally eligible due to replacing an injured player.

The Dodgers signed Trivino to a Minor League contract earlier this month. The right-hander made just one appearance for the Comets prior to joining the Dodgers roster.

Trivino previously was up in the Majors this season with the San Francisco Giants. He had signed a Minor League deal with San Francisco during the offseason and put together an impressive showing in Spring Training that earned him a spot on their Opening Day roster and thus $1.5 million salary.

That was followed by Trivino struggling and getting designated for assignment. He pitched to a 5.84 ERA and 1.29 WHIP in 11 appearances. The home run ball was of particular trouble for Trivino, as he gave up four in only 12.1 innings pitched.

The 33-year-old made his MLB debut with the Oakland Athletics in 2018 and it marked the start of being with the team for parts of five seasons. Trivino split the 2022 season with the A’s and New York Yankees.

He missed the entire 2023 and 2024 seasons because of Tommy John surgery and right elbow soreness that surfaced during the rehab process.

Kirby Yates joins Dodgers pitchers on injured list

Along with Yates, the complete group of Dodgers pitchers on the injured list are Tyler Glasnow, Brusdar Graterol, Michael Grove, Edgardo Henriquez, Kyle Hurt, Michael Kopech, Evan Phillips, River Ryan, Roki Sasaki, Emmet Sheehan, Blake Snell, Gavin Stone and Blake Treinen.

Hurt, Ryan and Stone aren’t expected to pitch during the 2025 season.
