Dodgers Roster: Justin Bruihl Recalled, Nick Robertson Optioned

The Los Angeles Dodgers recalled Justin Bruihl from Triple-A Oklahoma City and optioned Nick Robertson prior to the series finale against the Baltimore Orioles. Also before first pitch, the Dodgers recalled Jonny DeLuca and put Jake Marisnick on the 10-day injured list with a left hamstring strain.

Robertson last pitched on Tuesday night, allowing one run over 1.2 innings to finish out the Dodgers’ 10-3 win. The appearance was his second in a three-day stretch.

The right-hander made his MLB debut against the Cincinnati Reds on June 7 and has appeared in nine games this season. Robertson has pitched to a 6.10 ERA and 2.03 WHIP in those appearances.

Although Robertson has an inflated ERA, he’s allowed one run or fewer in six games.

While with Oklahoma City, he’s gone 2-0 with seven saves, a 2.73 ERA and 0.99 WHIP in 25 games. The roster move marks a second time Robertson has been optioned this season.

His latest stint with the Dodgers began July 6 as the corresponding move to Daniel Hudson being placed on the 15-day IL due to a sprained MCL in his right knee. Hudson has since been transferred to the 60-day IL as he faces a lengthy recovery.

Justin Bruihl invaluable to Dodgers

Bruihl is back up with the Dodgers nearly three weeks after he was optioned in order to activate Julio Urías off the injured list.

Bruihl is 1-0 with a 3.72 ERA and 1.24 WHIP in 16 games for the Dodgers. Having made 15 appearances for Oklahoma City, he’s gone 5-2 with one save and a 2.04 ERA.

The Dodgers adding Bruihl to their bullpen gives them a fresh arm as he hasn’t pitched since July 15. However, with Bruihl back up with the team, he can only be optioned to the Minors once more this season.

If a team attempts to option a player more than the permitted five times in a single season, he would first be placed on waivers.

“Can’t say enough about him, how he’s handled the elevator and not let it affect performance,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts recently said about Bruihl.

“I think there’s life to the ball now, there’s a confidence there, there’s an edginess. We’re lucky to have him. Very lucky to have him.”
