The Los Angeles Dodgers designated Jake Reed for assignment in order to add Billy McKinney to their 40-man roster after he was acquired in a trade with the New York Mets.
Reed signed a Minor League contract with the Dodgers last month and was called up on July 6. The right-hander made his MLB debut that night and served as an opener in the following game against the Miami Marlins.
Reed originally was a fifth-round draft pick of the Minnesota Twins in 2014 out of the University of Oregon. He remained in the Twins organization until 2020 when he signed a Minor League contract with the L.A. Angels.
After not playing last year due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, Reed began 2021 with the Angels’ Triple-A Salt Lake City affiliate, making eight appearances and posting an 8.44 ERA and 1.78 WHIP in 10.2 innings before being released on June 2.
Reed allowed three runs (two earned) across 5.1 innings pitched over six games (one start) for the Dodgers. He was optioned to Triple-A Oklahoma City on Monday as the corresponding roster move to activating Victor Gonzalez off the 10-day injured list.
The Dodgers now have one week to trade Reed if he is claimed off waivers. Should the 28-year-old clear waivers, he could be sent outright to Oklahoma City.
Dodgers acquire McKinney
Although the Dodgers are focused on pitching as the MLB trade deadline approaches July 30, their need for position players has grown in recent days.
Mookie Betts remained bothered by right hip irritation, Gavin Lux is on the IL because of a left hamstring strain, Justin Turner is suffering from left knee contusion and Max Muncy is battling a right shoulder contusion.
DJ Peters, Luke Raley and Zach Reks have struggled in minimal opportunities so far this year. McKinney is similar to that trio, but does bring more Major League experience to the table.
