Dodgers Roster: Emmet Sheehan Transferred To 60-Day Injured List

The Los Angeles Dodgers transferred Emmet Sheehan to the 60-day injured list in order to make room for Nabil Crismatt on their 40-man roster. Kyle Hurt was optioned Sunday in order to add Crsimatt to the active roster prior to the series finale against the St. Louis Cardinals.

Sheehan was slowed during Spring Training because of what Dodgers general manager Dave Roberts initially described as general body soreness. Roberts believed the trouble stemmed from Sheehan overexerting himself some during a bullpen session that included Shohei Ohtani stepping in the batter’s box to track pitches.

Sheehan was shut down for a week before resuming a throwing program, but he had fallen far enough behind that appearing in a Spring Training game was not going to be feasible.

His ailment was updated to be right shoulder soreness, but the Dodgers officially put Sheehan on the 15-day injured list with right forearm inflammation at the time of setting their Opening Day roster for the Seoul Series.

Roberts nevertheless indicated the 24-year-old was doing well and had just faced batters.

Sheehan had hopes of building off his 2023 season in which he went 4-1 with a 4.92 ERA, 4.85 FIP and 1.19 WHIP across 13 games (11 starts) for the Dodgers. Had he managed to remain healthy, it’s conceivable Sheehan would’ve been part of the Dodgers’ Opening Day rotation.

Instead, he was not part of a competition won by Gavin Stone, who edged out Hurt, Ryan Yarbrough and Michael Grove. Hurt, Grove and Yarbrough each were then part of the Dodgers bullpen to begin the season.

When can Emmet Sheehan return?

Now on the 60-day IL, the earliest date Sheehan can be activated is Saturday, May 18. That places further strain on the Dodgers’ pitching depth as several starters currently aren’t available.
