The Philadelphia Phillies claimed Dylan Covey off waivers two days after he was designated for assignment by the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Covey only pitched in one game for his hometown team, providing four-plus innings after Dustin May was removed due to a right flexor pronator strain. That wound up being part of a four-game stretch in which a Dodgers starting pitcher failed to complete more than four innings.
Covey had been added to the Dodgers roster on Wednesday afternoon as a corresponding move to Justin Bruihl getting optioned one day after he helped take a burden off the bullpen.
The 31-year-old then was DFA’d so the Dodgers could add Andre Jackson as the latest fresh arm to the bullpen. Jackson’s time on the Dodgers roster also was just one game, as he was optioned Friday in order to bring up Tyler Cyr from Triple-A Oklahoma City.
Prior to having his contract selected by the Dodgers, Covey had a 4.22 ERA, 5.20 FIP and 1.44 WHIP, and averaged 7.88 strikeouts per nine and 5.06 walks per nine in seven games (six starts) for Oklahoma City.
Covey spent parts of four seasons with the Chicago White Sox and Boston Red Sox, posting a combined 6.57 ERA, 1.59 WHIP and 5.48 FIP across 264.1 innings during that span. His appearance with the Dodgers was Covey’s first at the Major League level since 2020.
He signed a Minor League contract with the Dodgers during the offseason.
Dylan Covey appreciated Dodgers opportunity
On top of helping provide some length in an emergency situation, Covey was thankful to be with the Dodgers after rooting for the team while growing up.
“It was really special,” Covey said of his appearance. “I grew up 15 minutes up the road, as a Dodger fan. A couple years ago, I didn’t ever think I’d be back in this situation. It’s really special playing for the hometown team. My family is here and got to see me, so really special.”
