Dinelson Lamet cleared waivers and was sent outright to the Triple-A Oklahoma City Baseball Club. Lamet was designated for assignment by the Los Angeles Dodgers last Saturday after three appearances and 4.1 innings with the club.
Gus Varland was recalled from Oklahoma City as the corresponding move at the time.
Lamet was effective in his limited stint with the Dodgers, allowing one earned run and picking up a save against the San Francisco Giants on April 3 while providing extra value as a multi-inning reliever out of the bullpen.
It was a move made out of necessity for fresh arms as the Dodgers bullpen has been leaned on heavily in the early part of the season. It is not the first time that the Dodgers have made this type of move, with Nabil Crismatt making one appearance before getting DFA’d himself in order to make room for Lamet.
The Dodgers were lucky enough that Crismatt also made it through waivers and remained part of the organization upon being sent outright to Oklahoma City.
This early into the season there likely was not enough of a sample size to move the needle for other teams to claim Lamet. Any club that has to think about making a move for Lamet not only needs to be willing to make room for him on the active roster, but also their 40-man roster.
Can Dinelson Lamet find his old form with Dodgers?
A former top prospect that finished fourth in National League Cy Young voting with the San Diego Padres back in 2020, Lamet has still been valued by front offices across MLB despite his struggles the past three seasons.
Since being traded to the Milwaukee Brewers, who he never made an appearance for, Lamet has bounced around the league with stints with the Colorado Rockies and Boston Red Sox, with every team hoping they could get him back to his 2020 form.
With a knack for revitalizing pitching careers, the Dodgers took their shot at helping Lamet crack the code when the two sides came to an agreement on Feb. 5. So far Lamet has three strikeouts and a 0.92 WHIP in 4.1 innings while opponents are only hitting .133 against him.
