The Los Angeles Dodgers placed David Price on the 15-day injured list due to left wrist inflammation and recalled Ryan Pepiot from Triple-A Oklahoma City to take his place on the roster.
Pepiot is scheduled to pitch the series finale against the San Diego Padres on Sunday following Caleb Ferguson, who is acting as an opener.
Roberts said Price has “a lot of inflammation” in his left wrist and he has battled various other injuries with his arm, elbow and wrist throughout the season.
“He hasn’t been really healthy all year,” Roberts said. “But he’s been grinding and trying to pick everybody up. I just think we kind of came to a breaking point there in Miami.”
Despite his health issues, Price has remained effective in his bullpen role. Across 38.1 innings this season, he has pitched to a 2.58 ERA and 3.85 FIP with a 1.17 WHIP.
As a member of the Boston Red Sox, Price underwent surgery in September 2019 on his left wrist after an MRI in August of that year discovered the triangular fibrocartilage complex (TFCC) cyst that needed to be removed.
The 37-year-old is set to be a free agent this winter and he has contemplated retiring at the conclusion of his 14th Major League season.
As for Pepiot, he returns to the Dodgers roster once again after making three starts in August, going 1-0 with a 5.43 ERA in those outings. The right-hander is coming off a quality start where he held the Miami Marlins to just two runs over six innings and collected a career-high seven strikeouts.
Pepiot is 2-0 with a 4.02 ERA over seven starts for the Dodgers this year.
Dodgers injury update: Brusdar Graterol
While L.A. lost Brusdar Graterol on Sept. 1 to the 15-day injured list due to right elbow inflammation, they also received encouraging news. Graterol underwent an MRI on Friday and the results provided a reason for optimism.
With Graterol set to resume throwing soon, he should be an option to return once he’s eligible to be activated on Sept. 15. The Dodgers set his IL stint retroactive to Aug. 31.
