The Los Angeles Dodgers transferred Corey Seager to the 60-day injured list as a corresponding move in order to add Bobby Wahl to their 40-man roster after he was claimed off waivers from the Milwaukee Brewers.
Seager had been on the 10-day IL since May 16 due to a right hand fracture suffered as a result of being hit by a pitch. While the Dodgers were relieved to learn Seager would not require surgery, manager Dave Roberts said the expectation would be he missed at least four weeks and likely closer to six or eight.
Seager recently began taking batting practice for the first time and was nearing the start of a rehab assignment, but that was put on hold due to lingering soreness in the right hand.
That prompted Roberts to say it was plausible Seager would not be activated until after the All-Star break. The paper move has sealed that as Seager can’t be reinstated before July 15, which is the day before the Dodgers begin the second half of their schedule against the Colorado Rockies.
A recent scan of Seager’s right hand showed the bone had not fully healed, which is believed to be the root of soreness as the level of activity increased.
The reigning World Series MVP has hit .265/.361/.422 with a 121 wRC+ and four home runs in 37 games so far this season.
Dodgers add Wahl
The Dodgers bolstered their Minor League pitching depth with the addition of Wahl, who was designated for assignment hours before getting claimed off waivers.
Wahl was originally selected in the fifth round of the 2013 MLB Draft by the Oakland Athletics out of the University of Mississippi. He made his debut with the A’s in 2017 and has also pitched for the New York Mets in addition to the Brewers.
Overall, the right-hander is 0-2 with a 7.63 ERA and 1.89 WHIP in 17 games across three stints up in the Majors.
