The Los Angeles Dodgers placed Will Smith on the 10-day injured list with a right hand contusion and recalled Chuckie Robinson from Triple-A Oklahoma City before Saturday’s game against the San Francisco Giants.
Smith’s IL stint is retroactive to Wednesday, Sept. 10. He was in the initial Dodgers lineup that night but got scratched shortly before first pitch because of swelling in his right hand.
“This is literally 15 minutes before the game as he’s getting ready, his hand started to swell up and compromise a little bit as he was getting loose,” manager Dave Roberts explained after the Dodgers completed a sweep of the Colorado Rockies.
“So we’ll kind of manage him, see how he is, the off day with treatment. And then Friday we’ll make a decision if he plays. Not overly concerned, but we’ve got to get that swelling under wraps.”
Smith underwent an MRI, which came back negative, just like a prior X-ray and CT scan taken of his hand. However, Smith did not play in the series opener at Oracle Park.
Roberts previously remarked that Smith would need to play through a bone bruise for the remainder of the season. He suffered the injury as a result of being hit by a foul ball on Sept. 3. While Smith initially avoided the injured list, he didn’t play again until Sept. 9.
Chuckie Robinson back with Dodgers
This marks a second time Robinson has joined the Dodgers this month because of a catcher injury. He was called up from Oklahoma City on Sept. 6 as the corresponding move to Dalton Rushing being put on the 10-day injured list because of a right shit contusion.
Rushing is currently completing a rehab assignment with the Comets, which has resulted in Robinson receiving another opportunity. Rushing is not eligible to be activated until Tuesday.
Robinson previously was only up with the Dodgers for two days and didn’t appear in a game during that span.
Robinson originally joined the Dodgers organization via a waiver claim at the end of May. He was designated for assignment on June 3 but cleared waivers and accepted being sent outright to Oklahoma City.
