The Los Angeles Dodgers placed Caleb Ferguson on the paternity list and recalled Justin Bruihl from Triple-A Oklahoma City prior to Tuesday’s game against the Milwaukee Brewers.
The Dodgers had been anticipating Ferguson going on paternity leave, as his wife Carissa was due to give birth to the couple’s first child last week. Ferguson remained with the team to finish their homestand and through the weekend series against the San Diego Padres.
“You just don’t know what’s going to happen,” manager Dave Roberts said over the weekend. “I know his wife is doing well, ready to have the baby. We’re just kind of waiting like everybody else is. Once it happens, we’re just going to read and react, and figure out what the corresponding move would be.”
While the Dodgers continued with their road trip to Milwaukee, Ferguson already wasn’t with the team Monday night despite the roster move not being made official.
The lefty reliever is 2-0 with a 1.26 ERA and 0.84 WHIP in 15 games this season. MLB roster rules require Ferguson to remain on paternity leave for at least one day but no more than three.
Meanwhile, Bruihl is up with the Dodgers for a second time this season. He initially was recalled from Oklahoma City to replace Andre Jackson due to the Dodgers preferring another left-hander in their bullpen for series with the New York Mets and Chicago Cubs.
Bruihl was optioned to OKC on April 28 when Brusdar Graterol returned from the paternity list. He strung together four scoreless innings across his first four appearances before allowing a run on three hits during a loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates on April 26.
With Oklahoma City, the 25-year-old is 3-0 with eight scoreless innings over six games. Although Bruihl was optioned to OKC at the end of April, he was transferred to Low-A Rancho Cucamonga in order to remain close to the Dodgers.
He threw a scoreless inning in one appearance for the Quakes.
Dodgers paternity list
The Dodgers paternity list this season has comprised of Mookie Betts, Evan Phillips, Brusdar Graterol, Max Muncy and now Ferguson.
While no longer part of the team, Cody Bellinger recently was on leave to welcome the birth of his second child.
