Dodgers Roster: Brusdar Graterol Placed On Injured List, Reyes Moronta Recalled

The Los Angeles Dodgers placed Brusdar Graterol on the 15-day injured list with right shoulder inflammation and recalled Reyes Moronta from Triple-A Oklahoma City. Graterol’s stint on the IL is retroactive to July 11.

The 23-year-old has become an important part of the Dodgers bullpen which has already been depleted by injuries to other key relievers, including Blake Treinen, Daniel Hudson and Tommy Kahnle.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts has been using the Graterol in high-leverage situations recently, including giving the right-hander multiple save opportunities.

In 40.1 innings Graterol has pitched to a 3.35 ERA and 3.31 FIP while striking out 21.9% of hitters and walking 6.3%. In parts of four seasons with the Dodgers, he is a combined 7-6 with a 3.80 ERA in 106.2 innings and 85 strikeouts.

Graterol previously dealt with a cramp on his side that forced him to leave a game after throwing just four pitches, but after testing the Dodgers decided to keep him active and just give him a few days of rest.

Moronta returns for his fourth stint with the club. He has been mostly effective when the Dodgers called upon him, but he was optioned back to Triple-A after giving up a home run and two single in his last outing.

In 14.2 innings, the right-hander has posted a 3.68 ERA while striking out 25% of hitters and walking 6.7%. He is in his fifth Major League season, and he is a combined 8-9 with a 2.76 ERA in 147.0 innings with 177 strikeouts against 77 walks.

In nine innings at Triple-A, Moronta has posted an ERA of 3.00 and a FIP of 4.65, but perhaps the most intriguing part is he has struck out 40.5% of hitters he’s faced with Oklahoma City. However, that has also been accompanied by a 21.4% walk rate.

With Graterol down, the Dodgers will likely rely on Evan Phillips and Yency Almonte even more than they already have, and they will hope Craig Kimbrel can continue to string quality outings together.

Dodgers claim Jake Reed off waivers

The Dodgers claimed Jake Reed off waivers from the New York Mets, marking a return to the organization for the right-handed relief pitcher. Reed first joined the Dodgers last season when he was signed to a Minor League contract.

He had pitched to an 8.44 ERA and 1.78 WHIP in 10.2 innings across 10 appearances with the Angels’ Triple-A Salt Lake City affiliate before being designated for assignment and released. Reed posted a 3.38 ERA over six games for the Dodgers last season.

The 29-year-old only appeared in five games for New York this season, struggling to the tune of an 11.37 ERA, 8.64 FIP and 1.58 WHIP. He fared only marginally better with Triple-A Syracuse, where Reed sported a 5.73 ERA and 1.46 WHIP over eight games.
