The Los Angeles Dodgers recalled Brusdar Graterol and Darien Nuñez, optioned Garrett Cleavinger to Triple-A Oklahoma City and placed Max Muncy on the paternity list. Muncy has accompanied his wife Kellie in Arizona for the birth of their daughter this week.
Paternity leave requires a player to miss at least one day but no more than three. As such, the Dodgers are planning to be without Muncy for the weekend series against the Colorado Rockies before joining the team next week for a rematch with the San Francisco Giants.
The brief time off may also allow for Muncy to further recover from any residual effects of being hit by a pitch in his right shoulder blade that led to an early exit. Muncy was unable to lift his arm shortly after, but was in the lineup each of the next two nights.
Graterol is up with the Dodgers for a third stint this season. He began the campaign on the 10-day injured list and was sidelined again after appearing in just three games.
Upon Graterol making a recovery from right forearm tightness, the Dodgers activated him off the IL but immediately optioned the 22-year-old to Triple-A Oklahoma City. Manager Dave Roberts explained at the time it was with the intention of Graterol refining his pitches.
Graterol was recalled on July 2 as the corresponding move to take Trevor Bauer’s spot on the active roster, but he only remained with the team for two days before returning to Oklahoma City.
Graterol is 2-2 with one save, a 6.48 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and held opponents to a .194 batting average in 17 appearances for OKC. His inflated ERA largely stems from allowing at last three runs in two games.
Nuñez is back two days after being optioned to OKC, though he was seen throwing a bullpen at Dodger Stadium during his brief time off the active roster.
Dodgers betting on Mookie
Roberts reiterated the team does not expect to have Mookie Betts back in the lineup until Sunday at the earliest. Betts continues to be bothered by right hip irritation that has limited him to one pinch-hit appearance since suffering the injury last Saturday.
