The Los Angeles Dodgers activated Blake Treinen from the 15-day injured list and optioned Ben Casparius back to Triple-A Oklahoma City before Wednesday’s game against the Seattle Mariners.
Casparius heads back to the Minors three days after joining the Dodgers roster for the first time in his young career. Brent Honeywell was designated for assignment as the corresponding roster move, and he has since been sent outright to Oklahoma City after clearing waivers.
Casparius had his contract selected in order to potentially help provide length out of the bullpen for the series finale against the St. Louis Cardinals.
However, Clayton Kershaw took pressure off the pitching staff by completing six innings.
It then appeared likely Casparius would get optioned to Oklahoma City on Tuesday, but the Dodgers delayed the roster move so that he could be an option in relief after Walker Buehler.
Buehler only pitched four innings, but Casparius was not among the five Dodgers relief pitchers used in their comeback win.
Casparius began the 2024 Minor League season with Double-A Tulsa before earning a promotion to OKC. He threw just 21.2 innings for the Drillers while posting a 3.32 ERA, 3.15 FIP, 35.8% strikeout rate and walking 11.6% of batters faced.
With the Oklahoma City Baseball Club thus far, Casparius has a 3.54 ERA and 25.7% strikeout rate over 13 starts.
Blake Treinen returns
Treinen was first placed on the injured list Aug. 5 with left hip discomfort, so he missed the minimum 15 days away from the club. He was not expected to be out for the long-term, and the move seemed more in line with giving him a break rather than a serious injury.
Treinen made 34 appearances with the Dodgers this season, posting a 2.67 ERA, 3.89 FIP and 1.09 WHIP in 30.1 innings while striking out 38 hitters and holding batters to a .212 batting average before landing on the IL.
The 36-year-old has been in the Majors for 10 seasons, spending time with the Washington Nationals (2014-17), Oakland Athletics (2017-19) and Dodgers (2020-24) while pitching to a 2.85 ERA in 483 games. He has 80 career saves with 542 strikeouts.
Treinen missed all of the 2023 season, but rebounded to have a strong year thus far in 2024. However, he has dealt with some issues over his last seven games with a 4.76 ERA and a total of three runs allowed on July 27 and 30 in 1.1 innings.
