Dodgers Roster: Adam Kolarek Called Up, Andre Jackson Optioned

The Los Angeles Dodgers selected the contract of Adam Kolarek and optioned Andre Jackson to Triple-A Oklahoma City prior to Sunday’s game against the Philadelphia Phillies. Trayce Thompson was transferred to the 60-day injured list in order to make room on the Dodgers’ 40-man roster for Kolarek.

Kolarek gives the Dodgers a fresh arm for their bullpen game in the series finale at Citizens Bank Park. They originally hoped Julio Urías would be activated off the 15-day injured list for the start but he’s dealing with lingering left hamstring tightness.

Kolarek is up with the Dodgers for the first time this season. He’s gone 0-3 with a 2.18 ERA and 1.35 WHIP across 21 relief appearances for Oklahoma City.

In 15 games for the Oakland Athletics last year, the left-handed reliever was 0-1 with a 4.58 ERA, 1.58 WHIP and nine strikeouts in 17.2 innings pitched.

Kolarek has spent part of six seasons in the Majors with the Tampa Bay Rays (2017-2019), Dodgers (2019-2020) and Athletics (2022). During that time he’s a combined 11-4 with four saves, a 3.77 ERA and 1.28 WHIP across 170 relief appearances.

Jackson heads back to Oklahoma City one day after completing a three-inning save. He was recalled Saturday as the corresponding move to Shelby Miller going on the bereavement list.

Jackson was initially considered a bulk option for the planned bullpen game Sunday, but instead wound up pairing with Bobby Miller to handle the entirety of the second game against the Phillies.

The Dodgers have now optioned Jackson four times in 2023, which leaves them with just one more before reaching the limit of five Minor League options per player per season.

Dodgers signed Adam Kolarek during offseason

The Dodgers traded Kolarek along with Cody Thomas to the Athletics in February 2021 for Sheldon Neuse and Gus Varland. Kolarek became a free agent after the 2022 season and was signed by the Dodgers to a Minor League contract.

Neuse was claimed off waivers by the A’s in March of last year but now is playing in Japan. The Dodgers briefly lost Varland to the Milwaukee Brewers in the Rule 5 Draft, though he has since returned to the organization after being designated for assignment and clearing waivers.
