The Los Angeles Dodgers reinstated Hyun-Jin Ryu from the 10-day injured list and optioned Josh Sborz to Triple-A Oklahoma City. Ryu was placed on the IL April 9 with a strained left groin suffered during the second inning of his start the night prior.
Ryu was optimistic he would avoid being sidelined, but Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said the state of the bullpen required the club to make a move. JT Chargois was recalled from Oklahoma City in the corresponding move.
Although Ryu wasn’t able to avoid the injured list, he began to make a quick recovery. He threw from flat ground two days after suffering the strain and an ‘aggressive’ bullpen session early this week.
That paved the way for his return and start against the Milwaukee Brewers on Saturday. By immediately inserting Ryu into the rotation, the Dodgers are giving Clayton Kershaw an extra day before his second outing of the season.
Sborz returns to the Minors less than one week after joining the Dodgers. Sborz replaced Dennis Santana on the active roster for his first time in the Majors, though the young right-hander did not make his MLB debut while up with the club.
The Dodgers selected Sborz in the second round of the 2015 Draft. He’s thrown four scoreless innings with nine strikeouts and one walk over two appearances for Oklahoma City this season.
