The Los Angeles Dodgers placed A.J. Pollock on the 10-day injured list with right elbow inflammation and recalled Matt Beaty from Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Pollock’s latest issue adds to a long history with his elbow. Pollock had surgery on the elbow in 2010, not long after he was selected by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the first round of the 2009 MLB Draft.

The injury occurred when Pollock fractured his elbow on an attempt at a diving catch during a Spring Training game. It limited him to just 16 games in the Arizona Fall League that year.

Then in 2016, Pollock again fractured his right elbow while sliding head-first into home plate during a Spring Training game in early April and only played in 12 games that year.

In both cases, the issue stems from a growth plate in Pollock’s right elbow that fused open. What’s the root of that cause is unclear and can be attributed to any wide range of possibilities during a person’s lifetime.

The screw and plate that were inserted to stabilize the joint during the 2010 surgery has now led to the infection/inflammation Pollock is dealing with. The team attempted to treat him with antibiotics over the weekend, though they did not take.

Beaty joins the Dodgers at the Major League level for the first time in his career. He was selected by the club in the 12th round of the 2014 Draft and added to the 40-man roster last November.

Beaty hit .277 (23-for-83) with two home runs and 10 RBI over 22 games for Oklahoma City this season. Over five seasons in the Minors, the 26-year-old has batted .307 with 33 homers and 209 RBI across five different levels. He’s capable of playing first base, third base and left field.
