The Los Angeles Dodgers recalled Gavin Lux and optioned Mitch White prior to Saturday’s game against the Texas Rangers. It marks a second time in the past three days Lux has joined the Dodgers’ active roster.
He was among the players on the taxi squad for the six-game road trip and added as the team’s 29th player for Game 2 of Thursday’s doubleheader against the San Francisco Giants. Lux started at second base and went 0-for-3 with two strikeouts in his 2020 debut.
Although Lux was immediately returned to the taxi squad, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts indicated there was possibility for roster movement. “We’ll see what we’re going to do with Gavin over the weekend,” he said after the doubleheader.
Roberts had previously said, “his being recalled seems like a very good possibility at some point.”
Suffice to say, the season has not gone as planned for the one-time National League Rookie of the Year favorite. Lux was a late arrival to Summer Camp for an undisclosed reason and wound up being optioned prior to the team’s alternate training site prior to Opening Day.
The decision was attributed to Lux needing more time to find his footing at the plate, and Roberts recently refuted the notion the Dodgers had yet to recall the 22-year-old as a means of service time manipulation.
Lux’s arrival gives the Dodgers a bit of insurance on the position-player side. Justin Turner was removed in the seventh inning of Friday’s loss due to hamstring trouble. The team is hopeful it was merely a cramp, but Turner already has been ruled out until being re-evaluated Sunday.
White soaking in opportunity
White is headed back to USC after his second stint with the Dodgers this season, though the latest saw the right-hander make his MLB debut against the Rangers. He allowed a single and issued a walk but tossed a scoreless inning eighth inning.
White has been working on his delivery during time at USC. “Just working on slowing it down and fast, explode,” he explained.
