The Los Angeles Dodgers recalled left-hander Caleb Ferguson to start Tuesday night against the Texas Rangers, while placing Walker Buehler on the 10-day disabled list with a right rib microfracture.
Buehler left his last start against the Atlanta Braves with what was called bruised ribs, although he suffered it a couple weeks earlier when he was hit with a comebacker on the ribs while pitching against the Colorado Rockies.
Despite being forced to go on the disabled list, Buehler was not concerned that the bruised ribs is a long-term injury that would keep him out more than a start or two. But that the Dodgers didn’t backdate his DL stint suggests otherwise.
The 21-year-old Ferguson is making his second career Major League start. His MLB debut did not go so well last week in Pittsburgh against the Pirates.
Ferguson lasted just 1.2 innings, giving up two hits and four runs while striking out and walking three. For a reason that is not known, Ferguson did not throw a single changeup, one of his best pitches, in the outing.
He has been much better in the Minor Leagues so far this season, which factored into Los Angeles deciding to promote him in the first place. In eight starts with Double-A Tulsa, he went 3-0 with a 1.38 ERA and 1.05 WHIP while striking out 40 and walking 10 in 39 innings of work.
That earned Ferguson a promotion to Triple-A Oklahoma City, where he gave up six hits and two earned runs in eight innings (2.25 ERA) while striking out 12 compared to seven walks across two starts.
