Dodgers Recall Alex Verdugo From Triple-A Oklahoma City, Place Justin Turner On Disabled List

The Los Angeles Dodgers announced ahead of Monday’s series opener against the Philadelphia Phillies that they have recalled Alex Verdugo from Triple-A Oklahoma City and placed Justin Turner on the 10-day disabled list.

Turner has been dealing with a groin adductor injury and was removed from Sunday’s game against the Milwaukee Brewers in the third inning.

Prior to that, Turner had not started a game since July 11 and while he said he didn’t do anything to further aggravate the injury on Sunday, he is obviously dealing with enough pain that the team felt it best to put him on the disabled list and keep him out at least 10 days.

How long Turner remains out remains to be seen, although it could very well just be the minimum 10 days to heal the groin strain.

Verdugo, who is the top prospect in the Dodgers organization, is set for his second stint at the big league level this season. In nine games earlier in the year, Verdugo hit .265/.306/.382 with four doubles and three runs scored.

He is in the midst of an outstanding season with Oklahoma City, slashing .349/.396/.506 with 17 doubles, eight home run and 37 RBI while also stealing four bases in five attempts.

With Yasiel Puig expected to return from the disabled list in the coming days, Verdugo’s time at the big league level may not last very long.

He will certainly be back in September when the rosters expand though, as was the case in 2017 when he made his Major League debut.
