The Los Angeles Dodgers re-signed Matt Sauer to a Minor League contract and assigned him to Triple-A Oklahoma City for the remainder of the season.
Sauer was released by the Dodgers on Sept. 10 after he cleared waivers. He was designated for assignment on Sept. 6 to make room on their 40-man roster for Chuckie Robinson.
Sauer went 2-1 with a 6.37 ERA and 1.45 WHIP in 10 appearances (one start) with the Dodgers. The right-hander spent one day with the club in August before getting optioned to Oklahoma City on Aug. 22 as the corresponding move to Tanner Scott returning from the injured list.
That was the fifth time Sauer was optioned to the Minors this season. It’s the most allowed for one year under the current collective bargaining agreement (CBA).
If the Dodgers recalled Sauer at some point again in 2025, he would have needed to pass through waivers if they looked to then remove him from their roster prior to the regular season concluding.
During his initial time with Oklahoma City this season, the 26-year-old went 5-5 with one save and a 5.86 ERA in 18 games (17 starts).
Sauer made his MLB debut with the Kansas City Royals in 2024, throwing 16.1 innings with a 7.71 ERA.
If Sauer did not sign a two-year contract, he will hit free agency once again after the season ends. The Comets also only have three games remaining in their Minor League season.
Matt Sauer postseason eligible with Dodgers
Sauer is eligible to make the Dodgers postseason roster due to re-joining the same organization he was with at the playoff eligibility deadline. Any player in the organization as of Sept. 1 is eligible to be added to the postseason roster.
Even though Sauer was released by the Dodgers, they could still add him to their playoff roster if they wish to via a commissioner’s exemption, which is the path all teams take to add players not on the 40-man roster or 60-day injured list. However, that scenario is unlikely to come up given other options they have in their bullpen.
