The Los Angeles Dodgers re-signed Carson Fulmer to a Minor League contract after he cleared waivers and was released.
The former top prospect did not have any Minor League options remaining and was designated for assignment earlier this month in order to pare the active roster down from 28 to 26 players. Fulmer somewhat surprisingly went unclaimed on waivers.
Fulmer is now back with Triple-A Oklahoma City, where he began the season and pitched to a 2.31 ERA with 12 strikeouts across 11.2 innings over eight appearances. Since returning to OKC, he’s thrown two scoreless innings and pitched in two games.
Fulmer was called up to the Dodgers on April 30 as the corresponding move to Mitch White being placed on the COVID-19 injured list but did not appear in either of the final two games against the Detroit Tigers.
Before that, Fulmer pitched in two Cactus League games for the Dodgers, allowing just one hit and collecting three strikeouts over three scoreless innings. He flashed some of the potential that prompted the Chicago White Sox to use a first-round pick on him.
The Dodgers used their second-round pick to take Fulmer during the Minor League phase of the 2021 Rule 5 Draft. L.A. became the sixth organization the right-hander was part of since being selected eighth overall by the White Sox in the 2015 MLB Draft.
Over parts of six seasons with the White Sox and Cincinnati Reds, Fulmer went a combined 6-9 with a 6.41 ERA and 1.52 WHIP across 74 games (15 starts).
Fulmer views Buehler as pitching coach
Fulmer was confident the Dodgers would aid in reaching his full potential after a rough start to his career, and he viewed reuniting with Walker Buehler as an added pitching coach. The two have developed a close relationship since playing at Vanderbilt together.
