Dodgers Rumors: Emmet Sheehan Making MLB Debut Against Giants

Los Angeles Dodgers prospect Emmet Sheehan is scheduled to make his MLB debut on Friday against the San Francisco Giants, a source confirmed to DodgerBlue.com. Juan Toribio of MLB.com was first to report news of Sheehan’s impending callup.

Sheehan’s start in the series opener comes in lieu of the Dodgers relying on a traditional bullpen game, which had been the tentative plan as the team looks to fill Julio Urías’ spot in the rotation until he returns from a left hamstring strain.

When asked prior to the walk-off win if any of the Dodgers’ pitching prospects at Triple-A Oklahoma City were under consideration, manager Dave Roberts answered, “I don’t know. They might be. We’ll see. Right now they’re not an option, but that could change.”

Roberts then said after the win that the Dodgers were “trying to figure this whole ‘pen out. A lot of guys are going to be down, so it’s certainly not ideal for a bullpen game.”

Roberts added the Dodgers faced the need for a “collective effort.”

Although Sheehan is joining the team from Oklahoma City, he’s yet to pitch for the Dodgers’ top Minor League affiliate. The right-hander earned a promotion from Double-A Tulsa after last pitching for the Drillers on June 9.

Sheehan went 4-1 with a 1.86 ERA and 0.88 WHIP across 12 games (10 starts) for the Drillers. He was named Texas League Pitcher of the Month for May after going 2-0 with a 0.36 ERA in five games (four starts).

Sheehan becomes the sixth Dodgers prospect to make his MLB debut this season. Michael Busch was first to do so, and he’s since been followed by Gavin Stone, Bobby Miller, Jonny DeLuca and Nick Robertson.

The Dodgers do not need to make room for Sheehan on their 40-man roster due to recently clearing a spot when Adam Kolarek was designated for assignment.

When did the Dodgers draft Emmet Sheehan?

The Dodgers drafted Sheehan out of Boston College in the sixth round in 2021. He’s done nothing but impress since that time, which included standing out during the 2022 Arizona Fall League.

Sheehan set an AFL record by striking out eight batters in a row during a one-hit scoreless outing, a feat that hadn’t been accomplished since 2005.
