2018 NL West: Dodgers 5, Rockies 2
The most recent tiebreaking game came in 2018 to decide the National League West between the Los Angeles Dodgers and Colorado Rockies after both teams finished with identical 91-71 records.
It was the Dodgers that came out on top in this one to earn their sixth straight division title as Cody Bellinger and Max Muncy both hit two-run home runs and Walker Buehler turned in a gem on the mound, tossing 6.2 innings of one-hit ball. Buehler also drove in his first career run at the plate with a single.
The Rockies still ended up making the postseason as a Wild Card though, so it wasn’t a win-or-go-home game.
1980 NL West: Astros 7, Dodgers 1
Both clubs came into this one with 92-70 records, so this also decided the NL West. Dave Goltz got the start on the mound for the Dodgers and struggled early, giving up two runs in the first and two runs in the third. Reliever Rick Sutcliffe was then pegged for three runs in the fourth, and the Dodgers were never able to recover.
Joe Niekro tossed a gem for the Astros, allowing just one unearned run while tossing a complete game to earn his 20th victory of the season to knock the Dodgers out of the postseason.
1962 NL Pennant: Giants 6, Dodgers 4
Despite winning 102 games, the Dodgers failed to reach the World Series after losing to the rival Giants at Dodger Stadium.
After the clubs split the first two games, Johnny Podres gave up just one earned run in five innings and Tommy David homered off Juan Marichal, helping contribute to the Dodgers leading 4-2 going into the ninth inning. Willie Mays and Co. rallied against relievers Ed Roebuck and Stan Williams in the ninth inning, scoring four runs to earn a World Series berth.
1959 NL Pennant: Dodgers 3, Braves 2 and Dodgers 6, Braves 5
The Dodgers came out on the winning side of this one en route to winning the World Series. They defeated the Braves in two straight games, with the second one being a classic.
Hank Aaron, Eddie Mathews and the Braves jumped out to an early lead, but the Dodgers rallied with three runs in the ninth to tie it and send it to extra innings. They went on to win it in the 12th on a walk-off single by Carl Furillo, scoring Gil Hodges.
1951 NL Pennant: Giants 5, Dodgers 4
This game played at the Polo Grounds in New York City is one of the most famous baseball games played of all-time after the clubs split the first two games of the series.
The Dodgers scored three runs in the eighth inning to take a 4-1 lead into the bottom of the ninth. The Giants rallied for four runs in that ninth inning though to win it. The game ended on Bobby Thomson’s walk-off three-run home run that is now known as the “Shot Heard ‘Round the World.”
1946 NL Pennant: Cardinals 4, Dodgers 2 and Cardinals 8, Dodgers 4
The first-ever tiebreaker series that the Dodgers played in was not a kind one as they lost to the Cardinals in two straight games.
Despite winning 96 games, the Dodgers failed to reach the World Series while the Cardinals went on to defeat the Boston Red Sox to win it.
