The Los Angeles Dodgers placed Erik Goeddel on the 10-day disabled list with right lat inflammation and officially added John Axford to their active roster. Ariel Hernandez was previously designated for assignment as the corresponding move to placing Axford on the Dodgers’ 40-man roster.

The Dodgers acquired the right-handed relief pitcher from the Toronto Blue Jays minutes before the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline. He went 4-1 with a 4.41 ERA, 4.03 FIP and 1.26 WHIP in 45 games prior to the trade.

Axford’s inflated statistics can in some part be attributed to pitching at Rogers Centre, where he sported a 5.27 ERA and 1.50 WHIP in 26 appearances. Comparatively, Axford pitched to a 3.42 ERA and 0.97 WHIP on the road.

The former closer has been effective against left-handed batters, holding them to a .147/.244/.309 slash line, and is inducing ground balls at a 53.3 percent clip.

Goeddel has gone a combined 3-0 with a 3.06 ERA in 30 games for the Seattle Mariners and Dodgers. He last pitched in Thursday’s series finale against the Milwaukee Brewers, allowing a three-run home run in his only inning of work.
