The Los Angeles Dodgers honored Hall of Fame broadcaster Vin Scully with an on-field ceremony prior to Tuesday’s 2016 home opener against the Arizona Diamondbacks. It began with a video featuring some of Scully’s career highlights, and continued with Al Michaels hosting the tribute.
Al Downing, Sandy Koufax, Maury Wills, Don Newcombe, Steve Garvey, Ron Cey, Fernando Valenzuela and Orel Hershiser were among former Dodgers in uniform for the pregame festivities; Clayton Kershaw represented current players.
A pretaped video message from Hank Aaron was also played on the Dodger Stadium video board:
Dodgers part owner Magic Johnson and former owner Peter O’Malley then escorted Scully from the dugout to home plate. The group passed an autographed baseball down the line, with the first pitch ending in Scully’s hands
The longtime Dodgers broadcaster is in his 67th and final year with the club. The Dodgers dedicated Vin Scully Avenue to Hall of Fame broadcaster Vin Scully with a ceremony on Monday at the Sunset Boulevard entrance to Dodger Stadium.
Given this is his final year, Scully said he intends to expand his travel schedule ever so slightly. Included in that was calling Opening Day on April 4 in San Diego.
